About this Anchorage

Smuggler Cove Marine Provincial Park sits on the south side of the Sechelt Peninsula, just inside Welcome Passage about 16 km west of Sechelt. Behind its tight, rock-guarded entrance the cove opens into three small, interconnected basins ringed by rocky, forested shoreline and low islets, giving it a reputation as a genuine all-weather refuge.

BC Parks has set 38 stern-tie rings into the rocky shore, so most boats anchor bow-out and run a stern line to the rocks; with stern-ties the cove can pack in roughly 20 vessels. The innermost basins offer the snuggest, best-protected spots, while the first basin inside the entrance is larger but more exposed to wakes.

The park is closed to sewage discharge by federal regulation, so holding tanks are mandatory. A trail network winds through the surrounding wetland park, and dinghy shore access lets crews stretch their legs ashore.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

The entrance from Welcome Passage is narrow and rock-bound, only about 15 m (50 ft) wide between a shoal patch carrying roughly 3 ft of water and two drying rocks lying about 30 m off Capri Isle. The approach doglegs through the islets, and entry is best made near low tide when the reefs and projecting rocks are visible.

Once inside, proceed dead-slow with a constant watch on the depth sounder: the bottom is irregular with rocks and shoals hiding just below the surface, and kelp marks many of the foul patches. Drying and projecting reefs continue between the basins, so a careful eye on the chart (CHS 3535 / 3311) and a bow lookout are essential.
