About this Anchorage

Tucked behind a screen of islets and reefs on the mainland side of Queen Charlotte Strait, roughly 25 km northeast of Port Hardy, Blunden Harbour opens into a broad, well-protected basin with excellent holding in mud. Once past the rock-strewn entrance the bay is essentially landlocked, offering calm water in nearly any weather and room for several boats to swing.

The shoreline is a quiet mosaic of mudflats, shell beaches, small streams, and many-coloured rocks, with Bradley Lagoon reachable by dinghy through tidal rapids at high-water slack in the northeast corner. It is a common staging stop for vessels timing the passage to Slingsby Channel and the Nakwakto Rapids region.

Blunden Harbour is the site of Ba'as, the former winter village of the Nak'waxda'xw people, a Kwakwaka'wakw nation, and home of the renowned carver Willie Seaweed. The community was relocated to Port Hardy in 1964. The site remains culturally significant and should be treated with respect; do not disturb shoreline middens, structures, or artifacts.

Local Knowledge

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

The approach is made from Queen Charlotte Strait between the Robinson Group and the Augustine Islands. The entrance is narrow and lined with rocks on both sides, requiring a careful, serpentine track; identify Siwiti Rock and leave it to starboard on the way in. A detailed chart inset (CHS 3548/3550, or the large-scale Blunden Harbour inset) or a trusted chartplotter is essential.

Inside, the main anchorage basin lies behind Robinson Island; additional swinging room exists between Moore Rock and Byrnes Island. Watch depths and tides near the extensive mudflats at the head and in Bradley Lagoon, where boats can be stranded by a falling tide or current. Reduce speed and post a bow watch through the entrance.
