About this Anchorage

Spread along the shore of Bearskin Bay on Skidegate Inlet, Daajing Giids is the largest settlement on Haida Gwaii and the practical hub for any boat headed south into Gwaii Haanas. The village offers a fuller range of services than anywhere else on the islands: groceries and a Co-op supermarket, restaurants and pubs, a liquor store, ATM, marine supplies, hardware, fuel, lodging, post office and rental cars, plus the visitor centre.

The small craft harbour sits behind a dredged, pole-marked channel and is typically crowded with commercial fishing and local boats, leaving limited room for visitors; most cruising vessels simply anchor off the town in Bearskin Bay. As the mandatory Gwaii Haanas orientation is given here and supplies are scarce farther south, nearly every southbound boat stops to provision, fuel and clear in before the long self-sufficient run into the park reserve.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Skidegate Inlet cannot be entered directly from the east: a long drying spit and shoals extend several miles north from the low land at Sandspit airport, and Bar Rocks lie across the eastern approach. Most vessels of average draft cross the bar roughly two miles south of Bar Rocks, where there is about 4 m (13 ft) at chart datum, or follow the marked BC Ferries route; a rising tide is strongly advised. Use chart CHS 3890/3891 and watch for drying flats and shoal patches throughout the inlet.

Tidal streams run strongly through Skidegate Inlet and the narrows, so time the passage near slack or with a fair current. The marina itself is reached through an L-shaped channel excavated from surrounding shallows and marked by tall steel poles with port/starboard indicators; approach it carefully and on sufficient tide.

Cruising info goes stale fast — fees change, fuel docks close, hours shift. WalkTheDock stays accurate because boaters who’ve actually been here keep it current. Spot something out of date? Suggest a correction; once a moderator approves it the change goes live and you’re credited below.
