About this Anchorage

Gig Harbor is one of the most snug, all-around-protected anchorages in Puget Sound. A long curving sandspit nearly closes off the harbor, leaving only a slim entrance channel, so once inside you sit in calm water almost regardless of what the weather is doing outside on Colvos Passage.

The shoreline is ringed by a historic fishing village turned waterfront town: net sheds, marinas, restaurants, brewpubs and shops line the water within easy dinghy reach. Looking back out the entrance to the southeast, Mount Rainier rises dramatically on a clear day, one of the signature views in the South Sound.

Good anchoring is found over a sticky mud bottom through most of the harbor, with plenty of room to swing, though it can get busy and crowded on summer weekends.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

The entrance is narrow and shallow, marked by a small lighthouse on the sandspit on the eastern side. Stay in the middle of the channel; the water shoals quickly toward the spit and the sides of the entrance. Reported entrance depths run roughly 8-12 feet at low tide, so time your approach with the tide and watch the depth sounder, especially on busy weekends when traffic enters and exits simultaneously.

Inside, avoid the very northern portion of the harbor and do not anchor too far in toward the south/inner shore, both of which shoal quickly. Anchor in the central basin where depths and holding are best.
