About this Anchorage

Cannery Cove is a small indentation within the greater Pybus Bay system on the east side of Admiralty Island. As the name suggests, it’s associated with remnants of early cannery activity in the area—though little infrastructure typically remains beyond scattered pilings or shoreline traces.

Pybus Bay itself is a large, protected cruising ground, and Cannery Cove offers a more intimate, tucked-away anchorage within it. The surrounding terrain is classic Admiralty: dense spruce and hemlock forest, steep slopes, and a shoreline that’s very much alive with wildlife. Brown bears are common visitors along the beaches, especially during salmon runs, and the area feels remote despite being relatively accessible.

This is more of a niche anchorage—best suited for smaller vessels or those comfortable in tighter quarters—rather than a primary stop like nearby anchorages in Pybus Bay.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Approach via Pybus Bay, which is straightforward and well protected once inside Frederick Sound. From within the bay, make your way toward the inner arms where Cannery Cove lies (exact positioning will depend on your chartplotter, as the name is not always prominently labeled).

The entrance to the cove is narrow and easy to miss, with shoaling on either side. Favor the center and proceed slowly, ideally with good light. Depths can change quickly, and this is not a place to rush in on a falling tide without situational awareness.

Once inside, space is limited. You’ll typically be anchoring in 30–50 feet, mud bottom, with reasonably good holding. Swinging room is restricted, so anchor placement matters.

Hazards

  • Unmarked or poorly marked entrance: This is the biggest gotcha—easy to overshoot or misidentify without careful chart work.
  • Shoaling and uneven bottom: Depths come up quickly toward shore; keep a close watch on your sounder when entering and setting anchor.
  • Tight quarters: Limited room to swing; not ideal if multiple boats are already inside.
  • Old cannery debris: Possible submerged pilings or remnants—keep clear of shoreline structures and avoid anchoring too close in.
  • Williwaws: Gusts can funnel down from surrounding terrain, especially in unsettled weather.
  • Wildlife: Brown bears frequent the shoreline—use caution if going ashore and manage food/waste carefully.

Love this place. Great spot inbetween Petersburg and Red Bluff Bay or Warm Springs
