About this Anchorage

East Inlet is the middle of the three fingers that make up Klewnuggit Inlet Marine Provincial Park, on the east (mainland) side of Grenville Channel roughly 100 km southeast of Prince Rupert. Steep, forested hills rise directly from the water, and a small river trickles out at the head, where the park encloses Freda and Brodie Lakes on the heights above.

Boats anchor near the north end (head) of the inlet in about nine fathoms over good holding ground. It is a quiet, well-sheltered spot that rarely fills up, with seldom more than a boat or two sharing it. After the wind and chop that funnel down open Grenville Channel, the calm here can be striking, with mornings often dead-flat.

The surroundings are wild and largely undeveloped, prized for crabbing, prawning, and dinghy exploration toward the river mouth. There are no facilities ashore beyond rough, natural shoreline access.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Approach from Grenville Channel, leaving the main channel near Morning Point to enter Klewnuggit Inlet, then head up the middle (East) arm toward its north end. Wind regularly funnels down Grenville Channel and can blow 20 to 30 knots off the entrance, so expect lumpy conditions until you are inside the arm.

The inlet itself is deep and generally clean; favor the head's north end for the best holding. Note that the nearby Hawkins Narrows area (on the opposite, west side of Grenville Channel) involves strong tidal currents up to about 8 knots and should not be confused with the straightforward East Inlet approach.
