Manzanita Bay

A low, sheltered bowl tucked into the east shore of Revillagigedo Island, Manzanita Bay is a quiet Behm Canal stop with a trail to a backcountry lake - a gentle counterpoint to the sheer walls of nearby Walker Cove and Rudyerd Bay.

About this Anchorage

Manzanita Bay opens southwest off Behm Canal between Skirt Point and Wart Point, on the east coast of Revillagigedo Island within Misty Fjords National Monument. It sits roughly across the canal from the entrance to Rudyerd Bay, on the popular counter-clockwise circuit boats run around Revillagigedo from Ketchikan.

Unlike the vertical granite of Walker Cove and the Punchbowl, Manzanita is a low, forested bowl backed by a broad stream delta. A trailhead on the west side of the bay leads a few miles up the Manzanita Lake Trail through boardwalk, muskeg and beaver ponds, and a three-sided Forest Service shelter offers shore refuge.

The bay is a working anchorage rather than a showpiece - useful depths are limited to a couple of spots, and most visitors come for the quiet, the trail, and the wildlife rather than the dramatic scenery found elsewhere in the monument.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Approach is from Behm Canal between Skirt Point (to the south) and Wart Point (to the north); Manzanita Island lies just east of Wart Point and should be given room. Enter on a careful sounding, as the head of the bay shoals rapidly across a large stream delta and good anchoring water is confined to a few pockets.

Favor mid-bay depths and avoid setting too far in toward the drying delta flats. As with all of Behm Canal, watch for deadheads and floating logs, and note that detailed large-scale chart coverage of this minor bay is limited - sound your way in and confirm swinging room before settling.

Cruising info goes stale fast — fees change, fuel docks close, hours shift. WalkTheDock stays accurate because boaters who’ve actually been here keep it current. Spot something out of date? Suggest a correction; once a moderator approves it the change goes live and you’re credited below.
