Sea Otter Cove

A shallow, rock-girt cove tucked just southeast of Cape Scott, Sea Otter Cove is a classic staging stop for boats timing the rounding of the northwest tip of Vancouver Island, offering big hurricane mooring buoys and a fair degree of shelter behind a maze of islets.

About this Anchorage

Sea Otter Cove lies near the northwestern end of Vancouver Island, north of Mount St. Patrick and San Josef Bay and within Cape Scott Provincial Park. It is a favourite of fish boats and well known to cruisers as a place to wait for a weather window before rounding nearby Cape Scott and Cape Russell.

The cove is unusually shallow for the Pacific Northwest: much of its head and inner basin dries or carries only a few feet at low water, and large drying flats fringe the eastern and inner shores. Four oversized mooring buoys, said to be rated for big fishing vessels, are set in the cove; most cruisers tie to a buoy rather than anchor, though there is room to anchor in sand on the west side of the bay.

Surrounded by forest and ringed by rugged rocks and islets, the anchorage feels both secure and wild. A rough bog trail leads ashore toward Lowrie Bay, a worthwhile multi-hour round-trip hike.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Enter from the south, between Hanna Point and the Helen Islands, threading a narrow channel that grows progressively shallower as you proceed inward. The entrance is rock-strewn and intimidating, with big rock piles flanking the channel and swell that can break almost across the mouth in adverse conditions, so careful chart work and a rising/higher tide are strongly advised. Sailing Directions rate the cove only indifferent shelter.

Inside, extensive drying flats and a shoaling bottom limit usable swinging room; on a zero tide the entry carries less than 5 feet in places and the inner cove may show only 6-10 feet. Best water and holding (sand) are on the west side. Exposure is to residual ocean swell working in from the south/southwest entrance, though landforms give good protection from southeast through north.
