About this Anchorage

Teakerne Arm cuts deep into West Redonda Island off Lewis Channel, splitting into a north and south arm within Desolation Sound. The headline attraction sits at the head of the north arm, where Cassel Falls cascades roughly 30 m (about 100 ft) down a rock face directly into the sea, the runoff from Cassel Lake perched just above.

This is the classic Desolation Sound stop: anchor in front of the falls, dinghy to the provincial-park float, and hike the short but steep trail up to Cassel Lake for a warm freshwater swim. The setting is steep-walled and forested, scenic and busy in summer.

The water is very deep nearly to shore, so nearly every boat stern-ties to the rock wall. In settled weather it is a memorable overnight; the protection is fair rather than bombproof, so keep an eye on the forecast.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Approach from Lewis Channel into the mouth of Teakerne Arm, then bear into the north arm toward the waterfall at its head (Talbot Cove just inside the entrance and the south arm are alternate anchorages). The arms are deep right up to the steep shoreline, so soundings drop off fast and swinging room on the hook alone is minimal.

The main hazards are depth and crowding, not rocks: anchoring in 90-150 ft demands a stern-tie to the rings on the rock wall west of the falls, and a crowded cove makes maneuvering tricky. The waterfall outflow can set a light current near the head, and the anchorage is exposed enough that it should be treated as a fair-weather stop.
