It’s a scenic run with relatively calm water, but you’ll need to pay attention to tides and currents—particularly in the channel where depths can get skinny at low water. La Conner makes a great stop along the way, with easy dockage, fuel, and a good spot to regroup before heading north.
If conditions are settled, running outside up Saratoga Passage and around Whidbey can be faster and more open, but it leaves you more exposed to wind and chop. From there, Deception Pass becomes the main event—timing your transit for slack is key, as currents can run hard and fast. Done right, it’s straightforward and even a little fun; done wrong, it’ll definitely get your attention.
