Skagway Small Boat Harbor is the municipal marina at the extreme north end of Lynn Canal, tucked into the head of Taiya Inlet. With 87 slips accommodating vessels to 150 ft, pump-out, and shore power, it is the only protected small-craft facility in this corner of Southeast Alaska — and a US Customs port of entry for boats arriving from Canada.
Skagway sits at the northernmost navigable reach of Lynn Canal, at the head of Taiya Inlet, surrounded by mountains that rise to over 5,000 feet. The town is best known to boaters as the turnaround point for passages through the full Inside Passage corridor and as the southern terminus of the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad. In summer, cruise ship traffic is enormous — several ships per day during peak season — but the small boat harbor is a completely separate facility, managed by the Municipality of Skagway Borough, with 87 slips and room for vessels up to 150 feet LOA.
The harbor is located at 295 Congress Way, tucked away from the cruise ship docks. Transient moorage is first-come, first-served with no reservations. Daily moorage is $0.35 per foot per day; power is metered separately at $10.50/day for 30A or $21.00/day for 50A. Seasonal potable water is available on all docks. Restrooms and showers are on-site at the harbor office (showers coin-operated). A free pump-out station is located at the northeast corner of the harbor at the base of the gangway — contact the harbor office to arrange. A harbor crane, tidal grid, and pressure washer are available for rent.
Fuel is not dispensed at the small boat harbor itself. Petro Marine Services operates a bulk fuel facility at #10 Terminal Road (Phone: 907-983-2259), about a mile from the harbor. Diesel and gasoline are available there, primarily serving barge and commercial traffic, but call ahead to confirm they can accommodate your vessel and confirm hours. Petro Marine is not a typical walk-up fuel dock.
The harbor office monitors VHF 16 and 9. Hailing on 16 is standard. The harbor office is open Monday through Friday, 9AM to 5PM. The harbor phone is 907-983-2628.
Wind is the critical planning factor for Skagway. Taiya Inlet is a classic funnel: the valley drains Yukon air masses and the resulting gap winds accelerate through a narrow corridor straight at the harbor mouth. North gales are the primary threat — strong northerly outflow events can exceed 50 knots with little warning, and with the valley topography offering no deflection, these winds hit the harbor with full force. Vessels at anchor have been known to drag in north gales. The harbor itself provides good protection when winds are from the south (which prevails in summer), but southerlies generate a short, choppy swell that rolls in over the harbor entrance. Plan passages to Skagway with an awareness of outflow wind forecasts for Taiya Inlet, and monitor NWS Northern Lynn Canal forecasts closely.
Skagway is a designated US Customs and Border Protection port of entry (Port Code 3103). Boaters arriving directly from Canada must report arrival to CBP. During business hours, contact the local office. After hours or on weekends, you are required to have an appointment; contact CBP in advance. Only the master or designee may go ashore to report; all others must remain aboard until CBP clears the vessel.
