Refuge Cove is the essential resupply stop in the heart of Desolation Sound — a remote, weathered little community on West Redonda Island where boaters have been topping up fuel, filling propane, and loading groceries for generations. If you're cruising Desolation Sound, you'll almost certainly stop here.
Tucked into the southwest corner of West Redonda Island, Refuge Cove sits at the geographic center of Desolation Sound — roughly equidistant from Cortes Island to the south, Toba Inlet to the north, and the Homfray Channel anchorages to the east. That central position, combined with its year-round fuel dock and well-stocked general store, has made it the beating heart of the Desolation Sound cruising circuit for decades.
The cove itself is small and well protected, sheltered from all but the most extreme weather. A wooden boardwalk links the buildings — a weathered collection of structures balanced on barnacle-covered pilings — and the unhurried pace of a community that has been welcoming boaters since the 1960s still defines the place. In peak summer (mid-July through August) the dock can be packed by midday, with boats rafting several deep and a queue at the fuel dock. If timing matters, arrive early morning or late afternoon; the 11 AM–3 PM window is typically the busiest.
The fuel dock carries gasoline, diesel, and propane — the full complement of what cruising boats need. The general store is stocked for real provisioning: fresh produce, dairy, deli meats and cheeses, hand-dipped ice cream, a BC liquor agency with a decent wine selection, charts, marine supplies, cube and block ice, and a solid selection of books and magazines. It is not a quick snack stop; it is a genuine resupply point in a location where there is genuinely nothing else.
Moorage is on a first-come, first-served basis along approximately 2,000 feet of side-tie dock. There is no reservation system. Power is 15-amp only; water is available at the dock. When the main dock fills, an overflow float without power or water is sometimes available, and anchorage can be taken toward the head of the bay. Moorage fees are collected at the general store. A garbage barge operates mid-June through September (fee by weight) — a detail worth knowing after a long offshore passage.
Beyond the basics, Refuge Cove has a seasonal café serving coffee, sandwiches, pizza, and salmon burgers; a used bookstore; a craft gallery; showers and laundry; a post office; and Wi-Fi. A boater's lounge sits at the midpoint of the main dock. The resident population is small — around 20 families in summer, fewer in winter — and the sense of a real, functioning community is palpable rather than manufactured.
The approach from the south is straightforward: follow the main channel up Sutil Channel or Homfray Channel, round into the cove entrance, and proceed slowly. The cove is well-marked and the depths are adequate at 2-3 metres at mean low water. Tidal flow through the cove is negligible. In high season, approach with patience — dock turnover is rapid but the dock can appear completely full on arrival. Float planes stop here regularly, so watch for air traffic in the approaches.
