Homfray Lodge Marina sits on the eastern shore of Homfray Channel in Desolation Sound — a remote, all-inclusive wilderness lodge reachable only by boat or floatplane. Dock moorage and mooring buoys are available near Foster Point. Now operated as Klahoose Wilderness Resort by the Klahoose First Nation.
Homfray Lodge Marina occupies a dramatic stretch of mainland shoreline on the eastern side of Homfray Channel, deep in the heart of Desolation Sound. The channel — known to the Klahoose people as 'Thee chum mi yich' (travelling further back inside the passage) — runs roughly north-south between East Redonda Island to the west and the BC mainland to the east. It is one of the deepest soundings in North America, plunging to 750 metres, with mountains rising 1,500 to 2,500 metres on all sides. The scale is humbling.
The lodge occupies 10 acres of oceanfront land within more than 2,500 acres of Klahoose First Nation territory, on the traditional lands of the Klahoose, Tla'amin, and Hamalco First Nations. Access is by boat from Lund — via the Pacific Bear passenger/freight vessel — or by floatplane from Powell River. There is no road access whatsoever, which keeps the atmosphere genuinely remote.
For visiting boaters, dock moorage and mooring buoys are available near Foster Point, between Forbes Bay and Atwood Bay. The facility's large dock serves as both a marina berth and an activity hub for lodge guests — kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and floating platforms are moored alongside. The lodge operates a hydroelectric system fed by a river running through the property, providing 24/7 electrical power with generator backup, and has a modern dual-chlorine water filtration system and an environmentally sensitive septic system.
The lodge is all-inclusive for resort guests: meals from dinner on arrival through breakfast on departure, wine and beer with dinner, guided eco-boat tours, kayaking, yoga, hiking to Foster Point and a waterfall, and seasonal grizzly bear viewing. Visiting boaters should contact the lodge ahead of arrival to confirm moorage availability, as dock space is primarily managed around the lodge guest schedule.
The lodge operates May through mid-October. Now operated as Klahoose Wilderness Resort under Klahoose First Nation stewardship, it has evolved from the original Homfray Lodge while retaining its wilderness character. The nearest major marine services — fuel and provisions — are at Lund to the south or Gorge Harbour on Cortes Island; plan accordingly.
Homfray Channel is a spectacular cruising corridor. The extreme depth makes anchoring difficult except in a few reliable nooks — the indented north shore of Atwood Bay and Forbes Bay to the south. The channel opens into Toba Inlet to the north, offering onward exploration toward Walsh Cove and Waddington Channel. Native pictographs survive on the west shore, approximately 10 feet above the high-water line, worth a dinghy detour on calm water.
