Port Hardy Fisherman’s Wharf

The working heart of Port Hardy's commercial fishing industry, this Harbour Authority dock is the in-town option for transient cruisers — walkable to groceries and services, with pump-out, water, and power. Authentic working-harbour character with summer transient availability.

About this Marina

Port Hardy Fisherman’s Wharf

Port Hardy Fisherman's Wharf is operated by the Port Hardy Harbour Authority and sits in the inner basin of Hardy Bay, forming the working centre of Port Hardy's commercial fishing industry. The docks are the home base for seiners, gillnetters, trollers, and sport-fishing vessels — giving the wharf an authentic working-harbour atmosphere that differs sharply from the resort-style Quarterdeck Marina further into the bay.

For transient pleasure craft, summer is the practical window. When the commercial fleet heads to sea in July and August, float space opens up on a first-come, first-served basis. There are no dedicated transient slips — you call ahead on VHF 66A or phone 250-949-6332, and the full-time day attendant will direct you to available space, typically a side-tie or end-tie on the visitor float. The arrangement is informal and gritty in the best sense: you are sharing a working dock, not checking into a marina resort.

The wharf's strongest card is its location. It sits roughly a ten-minute walk from Port Hardy's downtown core, making it the closest dock to the Save-On-Foods supermarket at Thunderbird Mall, the post office, pubs, and the full range of small-town services. Crews topping up provisions before a northbound Inside Passage departure find this convenience hard to match.

Basic services are solid: fresh water is available on all finger floats, electrical hookups (15A through 50A on the main float) are in place, and a black-water pump-out station sits on the loading-zone float — a genuine asset given how few pump-out facilities exist along this stretch of coast. Public washrooms are on-site. Showers and coin laundry have been reported by some sources but should be confirmed with the harbour office, as information varies.

Note that there is no fuel dock at Fisherman's Wharf itself. The nearest marine fuel is Coastal Mountain Fuels at Bear Cove (6720 Bear Cove Hwy, diesel and midgrade gasoline, vessels up to 250 feet, 250-949-9988), or the Quarterdeck Marina fuel dock for gasoline and diesel. Plan your fuel stop separately.

Port Hardy Fisherman's Wharf is monitored on VHF 66A during operating hours. A concrete boat launch ramp is available year-round. The inner basin is reasonably sheltered from the prevailing summer northwesterlies, though an afternoon NW blow can push a chop into the harbour. The facility is a practical, no-frills staging point for northbound Inside Passage crews who want town access over resort amenities.
