Shearwater Marina Resort

Between Port Hardy and Prince Rupert, Shearwater Marine Resort is the only full-service marine hub on BC's entire Central Coast. Now owned by the Heiltsuk Nation, this legendary boatyard stop on Denny Island offers fuel, a 70-ton travel lift, full provisioning, and a pub — everything a cruiser needs before pushing deeper into the Great Bear Rainforest.

About this Marina

Shearwater Marina Resort

Approach and Arrival

Northbound vessels typically approach Shearwater via Seaforth Channel after crossing Milbanke Sound from the south - a 10-mile open-water passage best timed for early morning before afternoon winds build. Once past Ivory Island Lightstation at the channel mouth, the 25-nautical-mile run east along Seaforth Channel provides progressive shelter, with ocean swell largely attenuated by the time you reach the resort's protected harbour. Southbound boats often use Reid Passage and Perceval Narrows to avoid Milbanke Sound altogether, adding a few miles but sidestepping the worst of the open-coast swells. Call ahead on VHF 66A for a slip assignment, or raise the fuel dock on VHF 08. During busy summer months reservations are strongly recommended; call 250-957-2305 or email [email protected] well in advance.

Facilities and Moorage

The guest dock consists of 1,500 feet of concrete floating pontoons offering 30A and 50A shore power at all slips, along with potable water piped from an on-site artesian well. The marina accommodates vessels up to 150 feet LOA. Free WiFi is available at the dock, and cell service is reliable. Check in at the Harbourmaster's office during the primary season (May through September); off-season, the hotel front desk handles moorage registration. An after-hours call-out service is available for a $35 fee. Ashore, boaters will find coin laundry, showers, a fully stocked provisions and grocery store, a liquor outlet, a hardware and marine supply store, a post office, and an ATM - an unusually complete inventory for a remote coastal stop.

Fuel and Repairs

The fuel dock carries diesel, gasoline, lubricants, propane, Avgas 100LL, and Jet A - one of the most complete fuel offerings on the coast. Fuel is dispensed in litres at BC standard. Large-volume orders in the 10,000-20,000 litre range can be accommodated with advance notice. The boatyard behind the fuel dock operates a 70-ton travel lift and carries a well-earned reputation as the central coast's go-to for serious repairs. The shipyard team includes heavy-duty and small-engine mechanics, steel and aluminum welders, fabricators, and fiberglass technicians. Shearwater is a licensed Volvo-Penta Sales and Service centre. Whether you need a toilet rebuild or a full repower, this is the facility to use - the next comparable option is Port Hardy to the south or Prince Rupert to the north, each hundreds of miles away.

Dining and Local Area

The Fisherman's Bar and Grill is the social hub of the marina - a classic pub with pool tables, First Nations art, an outdoor deck overlooking the harbour, and live entertainment some evenings. Shearwater's sea-taxi service makes a run to Bella Bella (Waglisla on Campbell Island, roughly a 10-minute crossing) practical for reprovisioning at the community's band store or accessing the medical clinic. Bella Bella is the capital of the Heiltsuk First Nation, a community with deep cultural roots in this stretch of coast. The surrounding Great Bear Rainforest offers extraordinary wildlife viewing - bears, wolves, humpback whales, and orca are all routinely reported in the waters around Denny Island.

Planning Tips

Time the Milbanke Sound crossing carefully: depart early, watch the Environment Canada Central Coast marine forecast (McInnes Island lightstation is the nearest open-coast reporting station), and be prepared for wind that can build quickly to 20-25 knots from the southeast ahead of frontal systems. Once inside Seaforth Channel, conditions are significantly more manageable. At the marina itself, the weakest exposure is from the west and southwest, where Seaforth Channel's funnel opens toward Milbanke Sound, though 25 nm of channel length attenuates most swell by the time it reaches the docks. During peak summer season (June-August) the marina fills quickly - call ahead. Fuel prices are denominated in Canadian dollars per litre; the $35 after-hours call-out fee applies to fuel and check-in outside of regular business hours.
