The public dock at Bella Bella (Waglisla) is the Heiltsuk Nation's community fuel stop on the Inside Passage. Gasoline and diesel are available dockside, water is on tap, and the compact town behind it offers a grocery store, hospital, pharmacy, and cafe. Transient moorage is very limited.
Bella Bella, the Heiltsuk name Waglisla meaning "place of Waglisla," is the primary community of the Heiltsuk (Haitsaqv) First Nation on Campbell Island in Lama Passage. Population around 1,200, accessible only by air or water, it is the largest community on BC's central coast and one of the most important service stops between Port Hardy and Prince Rupert. Most Inside Passage cruisers know it in tandem with Shearwater Resort on adjacent Denny Island --- the two are roughly 1.5 km apart across the passage, separated by a $10-a-head water taxi that runs regularly.nnThe public dock --- also referred to as the government dock or fuel dock --- sits right at the community waterfront on Lama Passage. It is primarily a commercial fishing and local working dock with very limited space for visiting boats, and many cruising accounts note that transient moorage is effectively not available here: "the dock at Bella Bella is very small and mostly reserved for commercial or local boats" is the standard read. For overnight stays and full marina services (shore power, showers, laundry, pump-out), Shearwater is the right destination. For fuel, water, and groceries, Bella Bella is the stop.nnFuel is the dock's main draw for cruisers. Gasoline and diesel are both available, dispensed via pumps and meters on the wharf above with hoses that reach down to the dock. Dock attendants are noted throughout the cruising literature as courteous but firm about their lunch hour, plan around it. Potable water from the village treatment plant is available at the dock. There is no confirmed shore power or pump-out at the public dock.nnBehind the dock the community punches well above its weight for a road-less settlement of 1,200. The grocery store (rebuilt and expanded in 2017 with a bakery and meat department, restocked by supply barge weekly) is the main provisioning draw. The Heiltsuk Hospital, formerly R.W. Large Memorial Hospital, runs a 24-hour emergency room with three physicians and a nurse practitioner, and has a pharmacy open weekdays 1-5 pm --- an unusual level of medical infrastructure this far up the coast. There is also a liquor agency, post office, library (Thistalalh Memorial Library), bank (open three days a week), and cafe. Cell coverage is reliable in town.nnThe Heiltsuk Nation has a strong and visible presence here. The Nation acquired the nearby Shearwater Resort and Marina in 2021 and operates it as an Indigenous wilderness resort. Bella Bella itself is a living, politically active community --- not a tourist destination --- and visitors are guests. The dock is straightforward to approach: Lama Passage is well-marked and reasonably sheltered, though Campbell Island's exposure to SW winds (the prevailing late-June direction per Windy.app statistics) is worth tracking. Strong SE weather pushes up from the south; NW winds funnel through the passage in summer.nnFor fuel and a quick resupply, tie up, take on what you need, and be efficient about the dock space.
