Butedale Dock

Butedale is a haunting cannery ghost-town on Princess Royal Island — a 400-person boom town turned silent ruin — where a thundering waterfall meets tidewater and a working hydro plant still hums. Privately owned by Inside Passage Marine Corp, the dock is open to cruisers by advance permission: a raw, unforgettable stop on the Inside Passage with no fuel or shore power but plenty of atmosphere.

About this Marina

Butedale Dock

Anchored at the mouth of a U-shaped embayment on Fraser Reach, Butedale's drama hits you before you tie up: Butedale Falls drops 96 metres from a highland lake and explodes into the salt chuck at the head of the bay, filling a rustic wooden trough from which visiting boats have historically drawn fresh water via a garden hose. The waterfall is the soul of the place — it powered two massive turbines that lit the cannery town from 1917 until the penstock finally fractured in later years, and a small hydro plant at its base still generates a megawatt for the caretaker and work crews.

The cannery began as Western Packers' northernmost BC operation in 1911, passed to the Canadian Fishing Company, and at its peak housed over 400 summer workers before shutting in the 1970s. Today the site is 100% privately owned by Inside Passage Marine Corporation (founder Shawn Kennedy), which holds freshwater rights, hydro-electric licences, and approved marine-operation rights for the 28-acre deep-tidewater bay. Plans for a marina, high-end resort, and Spirit Bear Water Company bottling operation have been discussed; construction has been intermittent. The cannery buildings, bunkhouses, bowling alley, and managers' cottages are collapsing in photogenic slow motion — rotting planks, bats in the rafters, trees growing through the floors — while commercial trollers and Inside Passage cruisers still tie to the dock with permission.

Butedale sits squarely within Haisla traditional territory (Haisla name: C'idexs), at the southern boundary of their stewardship area; a pre-contact midden remains at the foot of the falls. Hartley Bay, 18 NM north, is home to the Gitga'at (a Tsimshian Nation band), and both groups have deep connections to this stretch of Princess Royal Channel. Spirit bears (Kermode bears) and humpback whales are seasonally present in the bay.

For cruisers the key practical note is permission: email [email protected] or call 604-649-1665 (Inside Passage Marine Corp) before arrival. As of April 2024 boats were still being received by advance permission. No fuel, no shore power, no pump-out; dock water unavailable as of 2022 reports — bring your own or try the waterfall trough. Currents at the dock can be challenging; the bay itself provides good shelter behind the fjord walls of Fraser Reach.
