Taku Harbor is a bowl-shaped state marine park anchorage 22 miles southeast of Juneau on Stephens Passage. Two public side-tie floats — roughly 890 and 300 linear feet — are maintained by the City and Borough of Juneau Docks and Harbors. No fuel, no power. The historic cannery ruins, a reservable public-use cabin, and reliable crabbing make it a worthwhile overnight on the Juneau-to-Petersburg corridor.
Taku Harbor cuts into the eastern shore of Stephens Passage at approximately 58 degrees 04 minutes N, about 22 miles southeast of downtown Juneau. The harbor is a natural bowl-shaped bay that opens to the west, offering good protection from southeast, south, and east quadrants. Steep forested hillsides rising sharply from the water provide substantial wind shadow on most bearings. The main exposure is northwest and north, where Taku Inlet outflow winds can occasionally push down Stephens Passage; the harbor itself is set back enough to buffer most of that fetch, though heavy outflow events can still reach the anchorage.
Two public side-tie floats serve the bay. The primary Taku Harbor float was built by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Sport Fish and is maintained by the City and Borough of Juneau Docks and Harbors Department. It provides approximately 890 linear feet of side-tie moorage with shore access. A second float at Stockade Point offers roughly 300 additional linear feet but has no direct shore connection. Note: the approach float at the primary dock was more than 50 years old and experiencing serious structural issues. The City and Borough of Juneau began replacing it with an elevated catwalk in March 2026 (project ran March 30 to May 1, 2026). The new catwalk should be in place and functional by the 2026 summer season, but verify conditions before arrival if calling early in the season.
There is no fuel, no shore power, no pump-out, and no marina services at Taku Harbor. This is a primitive state marine park: bring everything you need. Water is available from nearby streams but must be filtered or treated. The harbor is accessible only by boat or floatplane — no road access.
Ashore, the Alaska DNR maintains the Tiger Olson public-use cabin, available by reservation. The cabin is named for Henry "Tiger" Olson, who lived at Taku Harbor for over 56 years. There are pit toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and hiking trails. The site also features the ruins of the historic Taku cannery, originally built in 1901 by the San Juan Fishing and Packing Company, later operated by Libby, McNeil and Libby, and finally closed in 1947. Sheet metal and structural remnants are visible along the beach.
The harbor is a popular overnight for Juneau recreational boaters, and commercial fishing vessels and small tour ships regularly use it as a night anchorage. The anchorage in mud is good. Crabbing and fishing are productive. For reservations on the Tiger Olson cabin, contact Alaska State Parks at (907) 465-4563 or through ReserveAmerica.
