Haines Small Boat Harbor sits at the head of Lynn Canal, the northernmost reach of the Inside Passage. Managed by the Haines Borough, it offers permanent and transient moorage with fuel, 30/50-amp shore power, and a tidal grid. Haines is a highway-connected Alaska port of entry, making it a logical turnaround point for boats returning from Canada.
Haines Small Boat Harbor is located at the end of Lynn Canal, the longest and deepest fjord in North America, roughly 90 miles by water north of Juneau. The harbor is administered by the Haines Borough Ports and Harbors department and serves a working mix of commercial fishing boats, state ferry traffic, and transient cruising vessels making the run up the Inside Passage.
The harbor is at Portage Cove, just off Beach Road at the south end of Haines. A harbor expansion completed in phases from 2018 onward extended moorage capacity; the facility now accommodates approximately 110 slips across permanent and transient floats. The harbor has a tidal grid for hull work and a crane at the fuel dock. The entrance is well marked and the basin is protected, though a strong northerly can push down Lynn Canal with considerable fetch.
Fuel — both gasoline and diesel — is available at the fuel dock alongside the harbor. Shore power is available throughout the harbor at 30 amps (120V), with 50-amp service at designated berths. Fresh water is available seasonally (summer months). The harbor also has a launch ramp, recycling and waste disposal, ice by the ton, and a lighted facility.
Contact the harbormaster at 907-766-2448 (office) or 907-314-0173 (harbor cell). Staff monitor VHF channels 12 and 16 during office hours; hail on 16 for initial contact. Email: [email protected]. The harbor office is at 22 Beach Road.
Haines is connected to the Alaska and Canadian highway systems via the Haines Highway, which runs northeast to Haines Junction, Yukon. This makes it one of the few communities in Southeast Alaska reachable by road, which is strategically useful for crew changes, vehicle transport via the Alaska Marine Highway ferry, and provisioning. A full grocery store, hardware, and fuel are available in town.
For US-flagged vessels arriving from Canada, Haines is a designated Customs and Border Protection port of entry. Call CBP at 907-766-2194 to clear customs on arrival. For Canadian vessels, note that the nearest Canadian customs re-entry to the north is at the Haines Highway border crossing. The Alaska Marine Highway connects Haines to Skagway (15 miles north by water) and south to Juneau and beyond.
