Letnikof Cove Dock is a Haines Borough-owned seasonal float on the Chilkat Peninsula, about 8 miles south of downtown Haines. It serves commercial fishermen, subsistence users, and transient recreational boaters accessing Chilkat Inlet — a remote, straightforward tie-up with no amenities beyond the float itself.
Letnikof Cove sits on the eastern shore of the Chilkat Peninsula where the Chilkat Inlet opens up south of Haines. For decades the Borough-owned float here has been the only practical dock on this stretch of water, serving the seasonal commercial fishing fleet, subsistence fishers working the lower Chilkat River system, and transient boaters working their way through Lynn Canal.
The facility is strictly bare-bones: a single floating dock with no fuel, no shore power, no water hookup, and no permanent slips. It operates on a transient-only, first-come-first-served basis. Moorage and launch ramp fees must be pre-paid at the Harbormaster's Office in downtown Haines (32 S. Front St.), so plan accordingly. There is no self-pay station at the dock itself. The facility closes every October and reopens in April.
The dock has had significant structural problems in recent years. The main float snapped in two in 2024, rendering it unusable. The Borough commissioned engineering studies for a full float replacement estimated at roughly $9 million, with state grant funding covering approximately half. As of mid-2025, a temporary repair returned the float to service for transient moorage, but the long-term replacement was still working through engineering and funding. Boaters should confirm current status with the Harbormaster before making this a planned stop.
Shelter at Letnikof Cove is moderate. The cove faces east into Chilkat Inlet and gets reasonable protection from the southwest and west. However, the Chilkat Valley to the north funnels cold outflow winds, and a strong northerly will push swell and chop directly into the anchorage. The dock is not exposed to the full Lynn Canal fetch but is not a snug harbor either.
Haines is the nearest full-service town with fuel, groceries, and chandlery. The Harbormaster can be reached at 907-766-2448 or the general port office at 907-766-6450. There is no dedicated VHF channel for this dock; hail Haines Harbormaster on VHF 16. Letnikof is not a US Customs port of entry — if you are clearing from Canada, do so at Haines proper.
No attendant on site. Pre-pay fees at the Harbormaster Office, 32 S. Front St., Haines, before arriving at the dock.
