Grace Harbour

A nearly landlocked inner bay off Malaspina Inlet, Grace Harbour is one of Desolation Sound Marine Park's classic destination anchorages - calm, forest-rimmed, and protected from virtually every wind.

About this Anchorage

Grace Harbour lies on the south side of the Gifford Peninsula, reached through Malaspina Inlet at the southwest corner of Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park. The harbour narrows to a snug inner basin ringed by dense forest that feels almost entirely landlocked, making it a popular first or last stop for boats working in and out of the park.

Holding is good in soft mud, and the bottom shoals gradually toward the head. With room for a number of boats and many crews choosing to lie along the shore, stern-tying is common practice here; the BC Marine Parks Forever Society has installed shore pins to make it easier. A trail from the head leads to a small freshwater lake popular for swimming, and there is a beach, a fire-pit area, and pit-toilet facilities.

The inner bay is well sheltered from all directions, giving consistently flat water even when outer Desolation Sound is breezy. It is a quiet, scenic anchorage rather than a service stop, so bring everything you need.

Local Knowledge

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Access is from Malaspina Inlet, which is narrow and studded with rocks and reefs - favor mid-channel, watch for kelp marking shallows, and time the passage for good light and a fair (or slack) current, as tidal streams run through the inlet. Turn into Grace Harbour around the entrance, noting the islet near the entrance and keeping clear of the drying and below-water rocks along the shores.

Inside, the water shoals toward the head of the bay, so sound carefully as you move in and avoid anchoring too far up where it dries or thins out. CHS charts 3559/3312 and a current cruising guide should be used for the detailed approach.
