About this Anchorage

Tenedos Bay cuts into the western shore of Desolation Sound below the granite bluffs of Bold Head, a steep-walled basin tucked behind a small island and a connecting drying shoal off the northwest shore. The center of the bay is far too deep for conventional anchoring - 300 to 600 feet - so cruisers tuck into the coves and shelves along the perimeter and run a line ashore.

The most popular spot is along the eastern shoreline, where a stream tumbles down from Unwin Lake and a short trail leads up to the lake itself. Unwin Lake warms beautifully from June through September and is a favorite freshwater swimming hole. BC Parks has installed pin-and-chain stern-tie anchors at numerous spots around the bay.

Sheltered, scenic, and central to the park's best cruising, Tenedos draws a steady summer crowd but rarely feels crowded thanks to its several distinct coves.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Approach from Desolation Sound between Bold Head to the north and the islets to the south. The principal hazard is a submerged rock lying off the south side of Bold Head that extends farther offshore than expected - it sits right on the probable track for boats running between Refuge Cove / Mink Island and Prideaux Haven, so give Bold Head a wide berth. Favor a mid-channel approach.

Inside, the bay is very deep through the middle, so plan to anchor close to shore on the shelving margins and stern-tie. Watch the drying shoal that connects the island to the mainland off the northwest shore. Sound your way in and set the bow anchor in 20-40 feet near shore before running a line to a stern-tie ring or tree.
