Ucluelet

A well-marked, all-weather harbor on the north shore of Barkley Sound, Ucluelet offers the first secure refuge and full re-supply stop on Vancouver Island's exposed west coast. Most cruisers tie up at the town docks, while Spring Cove just inside the entrance gives a quiet anchorage close to the open Pacific.

About this Anchorage

Ucluelet Inlet runs north from its entrance near Amphitrite Point into a long, sheltered fjord. The favored anchorage is Spring Cove, tucked to port a short distance inside the channel beside the abandoned wharves of the old BC Packers plant; the inlet's upper reaches off the village also hold anchored boats, though space is limited and most visitors prefer dock moorage.

The Village of Ucluelet provides the next true haven and re-supply opportunity for vessels working the outer coast. The Small Craft Harbour and several marinas offer floating-dock moorage with power and water, showers, toilets, and a fish-cleaning station. Fuel, groceries, restaurants, marine services, and a liquor store are all within walking distance of the docks.

The harbor is usable in essentially all weather once you are inside, making it a key staging point for cruisers entering or leaving Barkley Sound or running the open coast between Juan de Fuca and Clayoquot Sound.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

The approach is from Barkley Sound around Amphitrite Point, a low, rocky headland marked by a light and fog signal and exposed to frequent gales and heavy swell. Entry is via the buoyed Carolina Channel into the main entrance channel; following red-right-returning the marked route is straightforward, but rocks, reefs, and breakers lie off the headland and on both sides of the entrance, and incoming Pacific swell can make the approach lumpy in any wind or against an ebb.

Fog is common and can close in rapidly off Amphitrite Point, so radar and careful buoy-to-buoy navigation are advisable. Once past the entrance the inlet deepens and calms; the dredged approach to the town docks carries good depth.
