About this Anchorage

Bacchante Bay lies on the south shore near the head of Shelter Inlet in northern Clayoquot Sound, one of the more dramatically scenic anchorages on Vancouver Island's west coast. Tree-covered mountains rise almost straight out of the water on every side, and after rain a dozen waterfalls streak the steep walls.

A narrow entrance opens into a surprisingly large, well-sheltered basin that could hold far more boats than you are ever likely to share it with. The bottom offers very good holding, and most of the bay is shallow enough to anchor comfortably, leaving room to swing.

The real draw is the head of the bay, where Watta Creek pours in across a flat estuary and delta. At high water you can take a dinghy or kayak up the creek until tangles of deadfall block the way, exploring crystal-clear water below the mountains.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Bacchante Bay is reached from Shelter Inlet, typically as part of the flat-water route behind Flores Island from Sydney Inlet or Hot Springs Cove. The bay is protected by a narrow entrance; enter mid-channel and watch for the constriction, beyond which the basin opens up. Shelter Inlet itself is deep, so deep water persists close to shore until inside the bay.

The principal hazard is shoaling at the head, where the Watta Creek delta dries and shallows extend off the estuary; do not carry depth too far toward the river mouth. Anchor in the moderate depths of the basin rather than crowding the drying flat at the head.
