About this Anchorage

Nuchatlitz Marine Provincial Park encompasses the northwest corner of Nootka Island and a scattered archipelago of small islands between Nuchatlitz and Esperanza inlets, roughly 18 km southwest of Zeballos. Behind the protecting screen of outer islets lies a large, well-sheltered bay with a remarkably uniform bottom, making it one of the more secure anchorages on this exposed stretch of coast.

The setting is the draw: tide pools, intertidal life, white-shell beaches and the abandoned village of Nuchatlitz on the Indian Reserve island, with archaeological sites scattered through the area. The anchorage can fall absolutely calm once the evening wind dies, though the surf on the outer islands remains audible, a reminder of the open Pacific just beyond the reefs.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

The entrance is genuinely complex, a maze of rocks, reefs and drying ledges that demands careful chart study (CHS Chart 3676). The standard route is the longer northeast entry: pass east of Rosa Island, then follow the winding channel east of the charted islands and east of red spar buoys M46 and M48 (red-right-returning), with the bay opening up at M48.

A second, more direct entrance is described by the cruising guides, leaving the light on the 37-metre island to starboard. Either way, navigate in good light, watch for submerged rocks near the south-side islets, and expect ocean swell influence near the outer approaches.
