About this Anchorage

Dixie Cove Marine Provincial Park sits on the south side of Hohoae Island in Kyuquot Sound, on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island roughly 25 km northwest of Zeballos. Reached only by boat, it offers two distinct pools of sheltered water reached through a narrow channel running between Copp and Hohoae Islands.

The outer anchorage opens first; continuing west, a second, even more secluded inner cove is almost completely landlocked, ringed by old-growth rainforest and low hills that block wind and swell from every quarter. This inner basin is shallower, calmer and carries a mud bottom, making it the preferred all-weather spot.

It is a quiet wilderness stopover with no facilities and no potable water, valued mainly as a secure base from which to explore Rugged Point Marine Park and the rest of Kyuquot Sound.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Approach from Kyuquot Sound and enter through the narrow channel that separates Copp Island from Hohoae Island. The passage is tight but reportedly carries a minimum depth of about 6 metres (~20 ft); favour mid-channel and proceed slowly, as the constriction and surrounding shores demand careful conning and a watch for kelp and rock along the edges.

To reach the most protected inner pool, continue west past the first anchorage deeper into the cove. Use CHS chart 3682 (Kyuquot Sound) and confirm soundings on arrival; charted detail at this scale is limited and a bow watch is advised on entry.

Cruising info goes stale fast — fees change, fuel docks close, hours shift. WalkTheDock stays accurate because boaters who’ve actually been here keep it current. Spot something out of date? Suggest a correction; once a moderator approves it the change goes live and you’re credited below.
