A tranquil, hill-rimmed harbor on the southwest shore of Orcas Island, Deer Harbor pairs a full-service marina village with roomy swing anchorage and an enviably central spot for cruising the San Juans.
Deer Harbor sits on the southwest corner of Orcas Island, one of the most central and convenient bases in the San Juan Islands. The harbor is approached from the southwest via North Pass or from the southeast through narrow but deep and well-marked Pole Pass, a 50-yard channel between Crane and Orcas Islands.
Deer Harbor Marina offers guest moorage with slips and side ties up to roughly 110-120 feet, a fuel dock (gasoline and diesel), potable water, free pump-out, power, showers, laundry, restrooms, and a dock store with a take-out restaurant. Whale-watching, charters, and boat rentals operate on site.
Beyond the docks there is good swing anchorage in the body of the harbor, prized for its quiet, well-protected feel. Note that an unmarked sunken boat in the harbor is known to snag anchors, and the area tucked under the cliff at Steep Point on the west side is a poor place to drop the hook.

Entering from the south, give a wide berth to Fawn Island and the adjacent reef and Reef Island lying off the harbor entrance, along with rocks between Fawn Island and the Orcas shore; favor the marked channel. Pole Pass to the southeast is only about 50 yards wide but is deep, well-marked, and frequently transited; time it to avoid meeting traffic in the narrows.
Inside, the harbor shoals toward its head, so work the deeper central and outer basin and watch your sounder near the upper end at low water. The unmarked sunken vessel noted by local sources is an additional anchor-fouling hazard.
