About this Anchorage

Jones Island Marine State Park is a small, forested island wedged between Orcas Island and San Juan Channel, accessible only by boat. Its two coves bracket the island: North Cove, the main anchorage, holds seven year-round mooring buoys and roughly 128 feet of dock moorage (the dock is pulled out from early October to early April), plus room to drop a hook. South Cove is smaller and favored by kayakers and campers but offers less protection.

North Cove is the more sheltered and popular option, tucked into the island's north side and screened from most weather, while South Cove opens toward San Juan Channel and is exposed to channel swell and traffic. In summer both coves fill quickly and boaters should expect near-constant wakes from the heavy day traffic threading the surrounding channels.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Most boats approach North Cove from Spring Passage on the island's east side or around from San Juan Channel. The key hazard is a marked reef at the northeast entrance to North Cove, plus several unmarked but charted rocks along the southeastern shore; consult NOAA chart 18434 and favor mid-channel on entry. Current runs through Spring Passage and San Juan Channel and can be brisk, so time arrivals with the tide where possible.

North Cove is well protected from south and east weather but exposed to strong northerlies, which during high-pressure events can make it rough. South Cove faces the opposite problem, lying open to southerly winds and San Juan Channel swell and wakes, offering little shelter.
