About this Anchorage

Roche Harbor is one of the marquee stops in the San Juans: a restored turn-of-the-century lime-works village wrapped around a large marina, complete with the historic Hotel de Haro, restaurants, a chandlery, fuel dock, and the nightly colors ceremony. The protected bay sits behind Pearl Island on the northwest corner of San Juan Island, just a few miles south of the Canadian border.

It is also a designated U.S. Customs port of entry; vessels arriving from Canada now clear in via the CBP ROAM app at the dedicated kiosk rather than an in-person agent. Boats reaching the marina hail the harbormaster on VHF 78A for slip assignment once inside the harbor.

When the slips and mooring buoys fill in summer (and they routinely do), good anchorage is available out in the bay, typically between the western end of the buoy lines and the westernmost dock, clear of the fairway and mooring field. Expect plenty of company; this is a crowded, social anchorage rather than a quiet hideaway.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

The harbor is reached from Haro Strait / Spieden Channel. The usual deep-water entrance is between Pearl Island and Henry Island; avoid the narrow passage between Pearl Island and San Juan Island, which carries hazardous shallows. A second entrance is from the south through Mosquito Pass, the winding, narrow channel between Henry Island and San Juan Island, navigable but tight, with rocks, kelp, and strong tidal current, so transit it with care and attention to the chart.

Inside, the main hazards are congestion rather than ground: a packed mooring field, heavy seaplane and boat traffic, and a busy fuel-dock approach. Anchor outside the buoy field, watch your swing room and depth, and keep the fairway and float-plane landing area clear.
