About this Anchorage

Prevost Harbor sits on the north shore of Stuart Island, the westernmost of the San Juans, sheltered behind wooded Satellite Island and forming half of the two-harbor Stuart Island Marine State Park (Reid Harbor lies just over the ridge to the south, linked by a trail). Many cruisers prefer Prevost for its prettier surroundings and finer sunsets. The state park offers seven mooring buoys and roughly 256 feet of dock space, plus a year-round pumpout, with plenty of room left over to anchor.

Inside, the water is deep and the holding good over sand and mud, and the bay feels genuinely remote, with few buildings, roads, or other clutter to break the wilderness mood. Satellite Island walls off the harbor to the north, while the spine of Stuart Island shelters it to the south. Shore access leads to park trails, composting toilets, and picnic spots, with the longer hike out to Turn Point Lighthouse a favorite.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

The only safe entrance is at the WEST end of Satellite Island; the east passage between the island and the head of the bay is choked with rocks and reefs and should be attempted by kayak only. Approach through Spieden Channel, where tidal currents can exceed 3 knots and build steep, confused chop when wind opposes current, so time the crossing near slack. Watch your depth and chart carefully on entry, as the channel narrows in places and boats have struck rocks here.

Once past the western tip of Satellite Island, favor the middle of the channel until you are abreast of the park dock, then choose a buoy or anchor in deeper water down the length of the harbor, leaving swinging room clear of the shoals along Satellite Island's shore.
