Meyers Chuck

A snug, near-landlocked little harbor tucked behind a rocky maze on the Cleveland Peninsula, Meyers Chuck is one of the last truly tiny historic communities on the Inside Passage - and the home of a warm cinnamon roll delivered to your boat by skiff.

About this Anchorage

Meyers Chuck sits on the northwest tip of the Cleveland Peninsula, about 35 miles north of Ketchikan and just off the east side of Clarence Strait near the mouth of Ernest Sound. The harbor itself is a small, well-protected basin reached through a narrow, rock-studded entrance, with a sturdy public float built and maintained by the State of Alaska on an honor-system moorage fee.

The community is tiny, roughly seven year-round residents swelling to perhaps 20-25 in summer, and has long drawn artists. Weathered cabins on pilings, galleries, rustic sculptures, and whimsical found-object art line the footpaths and trails that wind to a driftwood-strewn beach and tide pools.

The local legend is Cassy's cinnamon buns: freshly baked each morning and delivered warm by skiff to visiting boaters tied at the float or anchored in the inner harbor. There is a public phone at the head of the dock, but no fuel and few other services.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

The approach is the memorable part: from Clarence Strait the entrance looks like a dead end until it suddenly doglegs to port on entry and opens into the chuck. A reef extends south from Misery Island and another protrudes from Meyers Island, with rocks and small islets fringing the north side of the channel; a buoy marks the reef off the islets. Enter between the markers and hold mid-channel through the turn.

The inner harbor is small and rock-bound, so favor a careful, slow entry on a rising or mid tide and watch for drying rocks. The float is the primary stop; if it is full, anchorage can be taken in the narrow arm to the northeast of the chuck. Consult NOAA chart 17423 for the latest soundings.
