About this Anchorage

Santa Anna Inlet cuts southeast into the northwest shore of the Cleveland Peninsula, off the Seward Passage arm of Ernest Sound, roughly a day's run south of Wrangell. The inlet narrows as it works inland, ending in a quiet basin ringed by steep, forested slopes with two prominent mountains rising to the north.

The favored spot is the small nook in the northwest corner at the head, opposite the creek that drains Lake Helen. Boats typically anchor in mud that gives reliable holding, and there is room for a handful of vessels; some cruisers add a stern-tie to the trees ashore for a settled night. A waterfall above the anchorage provides a constant, soothing backdrop.

It is a wild, peaceful stop with no facilities. At low tide extensive flats and a mussel-and-rock shoreline are exposed, opening up beach walking and access to the creek outflow, with good crabbing reported in the basin.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Approach from Ernest Sound / Seward Passage and stand into the inlet, favoring mid-channel as it narrows toward the head. The principal dangers of the wider sound lie outside the inlet (McHenry Ledge and an 18-foot rock off Union Bay are noted in the area), but inside, watch for drying flats and mussel-covered rocks that fringe the shoreline near the head.

The head shoals off where the Lake Helen creek enters, and the creek outflow can run a strong current; arriving near low water gives the clearest view of obstructions before swinging at anchor. Sound your way in and anchor before the drying flats opposite the creek mouth.
