Millbrook Cove

Tucked just inside the north shore of Smith Sound, Millbrook Cove is the classic first refuge north of Cape Caution - a snug, nearly bombproof hole where northbound and southbound cruisers stage their crossing of BC's most exposed cape.

About this Anchorage

Millbrook Cove sits near the entrance to Smith Sound on its north side, the first sheltered anchorage a vessel reaches after rounding Cape Caution northbound (or the last before heading south). For decades it has been the go-to staging stop for the crossing: if conditions on the open water turn nasty, cruisers duck into Smith Sound and tuck into Millbrook to wait it out.

The cove offers room for several boats, with the best holding behind the small island at its north end, where the surrounding low, rocky shore and islets wrap the basin into near-total enclosure. Cruisers routinely describe it as pretty much bombproof.

It is a working anchorage as much as a recreational one - commercial fishing boats come and go at all hours, so a good anchor light (and ideally a deck light) is recommended. The setting is quiet, wild, and unmistakably the threshold of the Central Coast.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Smith Sound is entered from Queen Charlotte Sound, with the cleanest approach passing between Egg Island (to the south) and Table Island (to the north). The wider sound is studded with low rocky islets and reefs - Dugout, Ruby, Egg and Armstrong rocks among them - so a careful chart watch and large-scale charts (CHS 3934/3935) are essential.

The entrance into Millbrook itself demands attention: there is a roughly 90-degree dogleg between the islands guarding the cove, and the channel is narrow with rock-strewn margins and kelp. Vessels drawing up to about 2 m (6 ft) report being able to enter and exit on any tide, but pilotage should be slow and deliberate, favoring the deeper water through the corner and watching for kelp marking rocks.
