About this Anchorage

Pruth Bay lies at the western head of Kwakshua Channel, the narrow passage that slices between Calvert Island and Hecate Island on the west side of Fitz Hugh Sound. It is one of the premier destinations of the Central Coast and a near-mandatory stop for vessels working their way along the Inside Passage, prized as much for its near-total shelter as for what lies just beyond it.

The big draw is ashore. The Hakai Institute, a marine research station, maintains a dock and a well-kept trail that runs from the pier across the island to West Beach and a string of other broad, gently sloping white-sand beaches on Calvert's exposed outer shore. Such beaches are extremely rare in the Pacific Northwest, and here there are roughly ten of them, often nearly deserted.

The bay itself offers good holding and ample swinging room. It can fill up in the high season, with a dozen or more boats sharing the anchorage on a busy summer night, but it rarely feels crowded. There is no cell service; the Institute has at times shared limited satellite wifi with visiting boaters.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

The approach is via Kwakshua Channel from Fitz Hugh Sound, running roughly east to west between Calvert and Hecate Islands. The channel is deep and largely clean, but it can funnel wind: a northwesterly in Fitz Hugh Sound often accelerates and bends down the channel, and cruisers report sustained 20-25 knots blowing out of Kwakshua, making for a hard slog to windward on the way in.

Continue to the head of the bay and anchor off the Hakai Institute pier, in roughly 3-8 m (about 10-26 ft). Favor the open central basin; tuck in clear of the dock and the rocky, drying margins at the very head. Coves to the north and south, and Keith Anchorage about 1.5 nm back from the pier, offer additional room. Verify final depths and swing against a current chart before setting the hook.
