About this Anchorage

Codville Lagoon Marine Provincial Park sits on the west side of Fisher Channel, roughly 3.3 miles east of Lama Passage and the Bella Bella area on the Inside Passage. Behind a narrow, easily missed entrance the lagoon opens into a sheltered, nearly landlocked basin ringed by forest, with Codville Hill and its three barren peaks rising as a useful landmark on the approach.

It is a justifiably popular stop: the water inside is calm in almost any weather, and there is room to anchor either at the eastern head of the inlet or in the protected pocket behind the central island. Seals haul out on the island's southern tip, and the lagoon is a recognized heritage place of the Heiltsuk People.

The signature shore excursion is the unmaintained 15-20 minute trail from the lagoon's eastern head to Sagar Lake, which has a distinctive red-sand beach and warm, swimmable freshwater. The trail is often wet, so rubber boots are recommended, and this is bear country.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

The entrance lies off the west side of Fisher Channel and can be hard to spot; Codville Hill's three bare summits help confirm the position. The passage in is narrow and carries obstructions, the most notable being a rock just north of mid-channel that covers to about 2 m at low water. Favour the south side of the entrance to clear a rock off the north shore.

Once inside, hazards are easily avoided and water deepens. Use CHS chart 3936 and proceed slowly on the way in. Although protection is excellent, strong outside winds can funnel to the back cove, so choose your spot and scope accordingly.
