About this Anchorage

Potts Lagoon sits on the north shore of West Cracroft Island where Clio Channel meets Beware and Baronet passages, about eight nautical miles southwest of Lagoon Cove. It is really several bays rather than one: the more popular south bay, dotted with a small community of float homes and a weathered wharf, and a quieter north bay that sees fewer visitors.

Holding is good over mud and there is comfortable swing room for roughly half a dozen boats on adequate scope, making it a reliable overnight stop for vessels transiting to or from the Broughton Islands. A shallow tidal lagoon at the head of the bay is well worth exploring by dinghy, kayak, or SUP.

The anchorage is best known among cruisers for its fishing: crabbing near the entrance is famously productive, and prawn pots set in Clio Channel just outside can yield good catches of spot prawns.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

The usual approach is from Clio Channel, which is wide and deep, with a few well-marked rocks to favor on the way in. Approaching from the east via Baronet Passage can be lively, as Johnstone Strait floods west-to-east while Baronet Passage floods east-to-west, and a brisk westerly meeting an eastward current can kick up a steep, confused chop. The reefy waters around nearby Klaoitsis Island warrant a wide berth.

Inside, take care: the narrow channel leading toward the inner lagoon is shallow with patches of kelp, and the entrance to the lagoon proper turns to rapids running up to about five knots at spring tides near low water, so it should only be transited by dinghy near slack. Anchor in the outer bays in good water rather than attempting the constricted inner reaches.

Cruising info goes stale fast — fees change, fuel docks close, hours shift. WalkTheDock stays accurate because boaters who’ve actually been here keep it current. Spot something out of date? Suggest a correction; once a moderator approves it the change goes live and you’re credited below.
