British Columbia — North Coast

Grenville Channel

A 45-mile fjord-like channel between Pitt Island and the mainland — narrow, deep, walled in by snow-streaked mountains, and the standard inside passage route north toward Prince Rupert. Lowe Inlet is the headline anchorage halfway up, with a waterfall at the head and a public mooring buoy that fills early in summer. Klewnuggit Inlet and Baker Inlet are quieter alternatives. Few anchorages, dramatic scenery, current that runs north-south with the tide. The channel feels closed-in until you realize it’s been like this for hours. This is the route the cruise ships take, for the same reason you do.
