Deer Harbor Marina

Deer Harbor Marina sits at the quiet western end of Orcas Island, tucked into a naturally protected cove that has drawn cruising boats to the San Juan Islands for generations. The setting is hard to beat: a sandy beach adjacent to the pier, cliff-backed hillsides to the west, and a compact waterfront community with an unhurried pace unlike anywhere else in the islands.

The marina offers 110 slips — 55 reserved for guest moorage — with modern floating dock infrastructure that can handle vessels from small runabouts to large powerboats and sailboats up to 120 feet on side-tie berths. Thirty- and fifty-amp shore power pedestals are standard on the guest docks, and fresh water is available at every berth. The fuel dock, located at the southern end of the marina, carries ValvTect-certified unleaded gasoline and diesel, along with a complimentary pump-out station on the same float.

Right on the pier you'll find the Marina Store and Grill — a well-stocked provisioning stop with groceries, fresh-baked items, espresso, ice cream, beer and wine, ice, bait, and prepared breakfast and lunch. The Barge gift shop rounds out the floating retail village. Showers and restrooms are open 24 hours (token-operated laundry runs during store hours), and Wi-Fi is included with moorage. A heated swimming pool across the street is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the marina rents kayaks, paddleboards, and bicycles for those who want to explore ashore.

For summer cruising, reservations are strongly recommended — Deer Harbor fills quickly on weekends. Hail the dock on VHF 78A during business hours for a slip assignment; the office staffs the fuel dock on the same schedule. Off-season, the marina operates first-come, first-served at reduced winter rates and the atmosphere shifts to a locals'-favorite quiet anchorage.

Approach from the southeast via Pole Pass — a well-marked, 50-yard-wide channel between Crane and Orcas Islands, designated No-Wake. From the southwest, enter through North Pass. The harbor itself carries 2–3 metres (roughly 7–10 feet) at mean low water throughout, with negligible tidal current inside. Note a charted sunken sailboat along the western shore near the southern end of the docks — anchor north of D-Dock or south of the fuel dock to clear it.

Deer Harbor's geography makes it one of the most reliably sheltered overnight stops in the San Juans. The massive clifftop terrain to the west blocks prevailing southwest and westerly winds, and the surrounding island mass shields the cove from north, east, and southeast fetch. The primary exposure is to the northwest, open toward President Channel, so northwesterly outflow events deserve attention — but most summer systems leave the harbor glassy calm.
