About this Marina

Dent Island Lodge Marina

Dent Island Lodge occupies a pair of small islets in Cordero Channel between Sonora Island and the BC mainland, roughly northeast of Campbell River. The lodge sits at the eastern entrance to a natural bay separating Dent Island from the adjacent shore, its concrete docks resting beside the churning reversing rapids of Canoe Pass — a position that is simultaneously one of the most dramatic and one of the most logistically important in all of BC coastal boating waters.

The Yuculta, Gillard, and Dent Rapids form a four-to-five nautical mile chain of tidal narrows that every Inside Passage voyager must navigate when heading north beyond Desolation Sound. Together they represent the most consequential tidal gate on the route: currents peak at 12.5 knots on flood and 9.5 knots on ebb, and the flood runs southward while the ebb runs north — the opposite of what many boaters expect. Devil’s Hole whirlpool forms south of Little Dent Island on the growing flood, and large whirlpools develop east of Gillard Island during strong flood conditions. Submerged debris — logs and deadheads carried by the current — adds further hazard during peak flow.

Transit planning hinges on Gillard Passage as the reference station. Northbound skippers should arrive at the Yucultas approximately 30 minutes before slack at Gillard, which allows the boat to carry slack water sequentially through all three passes — a window of roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Dent Rapids reach slack about 15 minutes before Gillard, and the Yucultas turn about 25 minutes after Gillard, so timing must be calibrated to the published current tables, not estimated by feel. On neap tides the whole system calms considerably; on springs it demands full respect.

Dent Island Lodge sits at the threshold of this passage, making it the premier staging stop for boats waiting for the next favorable slack. Reservations are strongly recommended — the lodge is well known to the cruising community and fills quickly during summer. Vessels up to approximately 180 feet have moored here. The marina offers 1,000 feet of protected concrete dockage, with 30, 50, and 100 amp single-phase shore power and unlimited potable water for tank fills and washdowns. Wi-Fi and good cell service are available at the dock. Approach from the southeast end of Dent Island and favor mid-channel to avoid a 0.9-metre shoal on the eastern entry.

The lodge itself is intimate by design — three log cabins with fireplaces, private water-view decks, and in-cabin hot tubs host a maximum of 26 overnight guests. The culinary program is a genuine destination: the Yaculta Dining Room serves multi-course dinners beginning with hors d’oeuvres and cocktails in the lounge, while the Rapids Grill, a covered open-kitchen deck overlooking the marina, offers a more casual experience with smaller courses prepared to order. Marina guests have full access to both restaurants, the bar, the gift shop, the sauna, exercise room, and hot tub.

Guided salmon fishing is the flagship activity — the lodge operates in waters feeding some of the finest chinook and coho runs on the BC coast. Freshwater fly fishing, jet boat tours of the surrounding channels, helicopter excursions inland, hiking trails on the island, kayaking, and wildlife watching round out the program. Black bears, bald eagles, harbour seals, Steller sea lions, porpoises, and orca are regularly sighted in the surrounding waters and shoreline.

Fuel is not available at Dent Island Lodge. The nearest stations are Refuge Cove to the south in Desolation Sound and Blind Channel Resort to the north in the Discovery Islands. Plan fuel accordingly before entering this stretch. The lodge is accessible only by private vessel or floatplane — there is no road connection to the island.
