Old Sitka Dock at Halibut Point is Sitka's only deep-water private terminal capable of handling vessels from sport cruisers to cruise ships. Operated by Halibut Point Marine Services, it offers diesel and gas fuel, an 88-ton Travelift, and a DIY boatyard making it the go-to stop for larger vessels needing haulout north of town.
Old Sitka Dock occupies a commanding position on Halibut Point Road, approximately 7 miles north of downtown Sitka on Baranof Island, close to the Alaska Marine Highway Sitka Ferry Terminal and the USFS Starrigavan Recreation Area. The "Old Sitka" name references the historic Russian settlement of Redoubt Saint Archangel Michael, established at Starrigavan Bay in 1799 and destroyed by Tlingit warriors in 1802. The modern dock facility is an entirely different enterprise: a private, deep-water port operated by Halibut Point Marine Services.
The facility is Sitka's only deep-water dock able to accommodate vessels exceeding 300 feet, and routinely handles cruise ships alongside working commercial vessels, private yachts, and fishing boats. For the recreational cruiser, the practical draw is the fuel dock dispensing No. 2 diesel and gasoline at 4513 Halibut Point Road. Contact the facility at (907) 747-4999.
For boatyard services, the 88-ton Travelift is the largest haulout option in the Sitka area. The DIY boatyard allows owners to work on their own vessels, with repair contractors available through the Sitka chandlery network. Major mechanical and fabrication shops are located in both Sitka proper and the Halibut Point complex, making this facility especially practical for Inside Passage transits requiring haulout, bottom paint, or significant mechanical work.
Transient moorage for smaller vessels is best arranged through the City and Borough of Sitka Harbor Department, which operates five harbors in town: Crescent, Sealing Cove, ANB, Thomsen, and Eliason. The Sitka harbormaster monitors VHF 16 daily from 0800 to 2300 and will advise inbound vessels on transient availability. Transient fees run $1.50 per foot per day for vessels under 80 feet. Shore power at 30A and 50A is available at the City harbors.
Starrigavan Bay itself, fronting the Old Sitka historical site, offers a sheltered anchorage for moderate-draft vessels. The bay is protected from the south and east by Baranof Island terrain but open to the northwest and can develop chop in northwest outflow winds. It lies within easy dinghy range of the Starrigavan boat ramp and the Halibut Point Marine fuel dock.
The Old Sitka State Historical Park boat launch ramp, managed by Alaska DNR at Mile 7.8 of Halibut Point Road, provides a public put-in for trailered vessels accessing waters north of Sitka. This is a productive area for king and silver salmon, halibut, lingcod, and rockfish. Launch fees apply; check the Alaska State Parks fee schedule.
