Port Alice Harbour Authority

Port Alice occupies a dramatic perch on the eastern shore of Neroutsos Inlet, a fjord-like arm of Quatsino Sound that cuts 21 kilometres into the mountains of northwest Vancouver Island. The inlet is narrow — 550 metres to 1.6 kilometres wide — flanked by peaks rising to 900 metres, running almost due southeast from Drake Island near the junction of Quatsino Sound's main arms. To reach Port Alice by sea, boaters typically enter Quatsino Sound from the Pacific via the sound's northern mouth near Winter Harbour, then navigate the broad inner waters past Coal Harbour before turning southeast into Neroutsos. The distance from the Pacific entrance to Port Alice is roughly 29 nautical miles of sheltered but remote water.

The town was born from one of British Columbia's earliest pulp operations. In 1904 the Quatsino Power and Pulp Company was granted a wood pulp lease on Quatsino Sound; construction of the mill began in 1916, driven by First World War demand for cellulose. The townsite — originally called New Caledonia, later renamed Port Alice after a daughter of one of the mill's owners — grew into a self-contained company town complete with a hotel, hospital, golf course, bank, school, and churches. A landslide in 1927 prompted the eventual relocation of the residential area to Rumble Beach, where the marina now sits.

The mill changed hands repeatedly over a century before being sold and reborn as Neucel Specialty Cellulose in 2005-2006, specializing in dissolving-grade sulphite pulp for rayon, film, food thickeners, and LCD screens. Production stopped in 2015 and Neucel was declared bankrupt in 2020 with $272 million in debt. The mill site — contaminated from a century of pulp production — has cost the Province of BC over $150 million in ongoing remediation, with unstable toxic waste landfills above the inlet cliffs still under active management. The century-old smokestack and main building were demolished in 2022-2023.

Today Port Alice is a quiet, resilient community of approximately 739 residents working to reinvent itself around nature tourism, fishing, kayaking, and outdoor recreation. Devil's Bath, a flooded sinkhole 359 metres in diameter and 44 metres deep just outside town, is reportedly the largest cenote in Canada and a growing draw for hikers. The streets are walkable from the marina; a grocery store, liquor store, and local services are within easy reach.

At the dock, the municipally-operated Rumble Beach Marina offers visiting boaters a solid if basic base. Eight concrete floating docks — built with Island Coastal Economic Trust and provincial grant funding, decked in locally milled red cedar — provide 400 linear feet of moorage capable of handling vessels to 100 feet. Amenities include potable water, free WiFi, garbage disposal, a fish cleaning station, coin-operated showers and laundry, and a paved boat ramp. Moorage runs approximately $1.05-$1.15 per foot per day. A marina manager is on-site June through September; the Village office at 250-284-3391 is the year-round contact. There is no shore power and no fuel dock — diesel and gasoline must be arranged by truck delivery through the marina office, or accessed from a service station near the north-end public dock for a small fee. No pump-out station is available.

The remoteness is both the challenge and the appeal. Port Alice sits at the end of a long, deep inlet backed by mountains and old-growth forest, with humpback whales, sea otters, and Steller sea lions frequenting the waters of Quatsino Sound. For cruisers willing to make the run from Coal Harbour or Winter Harbour, Rumble Beach is an uncrowded, peaceful stop — one of the quietest marinas on the BC coast.
