Ideal Cove is one of those classic Southeast Alaska hideaways—quiet, protected, and about as scenic as it gets. Tucked in near Petersburg, it’s a great stop if you’re looking to get out of the traffic and spend a peaceful night on the hook.
The anchorage is small but well-sheltered, with good protection from most directions once you’re inside. Holding is generally solid in mud, and it’s the kind of place where, if you set well, you’ll sleep easy.
What really makes Ideal Cove stand out is the setting—steep, forested shoreline, calm water, and that unmistakable Alaska stillness. You’ll often have it to yourself or share it with just a boat or two.
Things to keep in mind:
Getting into Ideal Cove is pretty straightforward, but you’ll want to stay attentive—this is Alaska, after all.
The entrance is narrow and a bit tucked away, so it can sneak up on you if you’re not watching your chartplotter. Favor the center of the entrance and avoid getting too close to shore on either side, as there are shoals and rocks that extend out.
As you come in:
Once inside, it opens just enough to maneuver, but space is limited:
Also worth noting:
Bottom line:
👉 Easy enough if you stay centered and alert
👉 Watch for rocks near shore and at the entrance
👉 Small anchorage—plan your spot before you commit
A beautiful, classic Alaska stop—but one where a little attention goes a long way.
