Petersburg North Harbor

At the north end of Wrangell Narrows on Mitkof Island, Petersburg is the Inside Passage's most authentic Norwegian fishing town — and North Harbor is where that authenticity lives. Humpback whales work Frederick Sound just beyond the harbor mouth, and the southernmost tidewater glacier in the Northern Hemisphere is 20 miles away by water.

About this Marina

Petersburg North Harbor

Approach: Wrangell Narrows

For vessels arriving from the south, the approach to Petersburg means transiting Wrangell Narrows - 22 miles of winding, shallow, rock-lined channel separating Mitkof Island from Kupreanof Island. It is one of the most navigationally demanding passages on the Inside Passage, marked by more than 60 lights and buoys. Tidal currents run 4-5 knots at most points, touching 6-7 knots near Turn Point, Spike Rock, and South Ledge during spring tides. Daylight transits are strongly recommended. Experienced skippers time their transit to arrive at the midpoint (Papke's Landing) near high water, riding the last of the flood northward toward Petersburg. NOAA Chart 17375 covers the narrows in detail and is essential. The Alaska Marine Highway System ferries transit the narrows regularly, so vessels should expect large commercial traffic in a confined waterway.

North Harbor Facilities

North Harbor is Petersburg's primary small-boat basin, operated by the Petersburg Borough Harbor Department under Harbormaster Glorianne (Glo) Wollen. The harbor accommodates vessels up to 140 feet, with slips for both year-round residents and transient visitors. Shore power with electrical hookups is available throughout the facility. A pump-out station serves vessels with holding tanks. When arriving, check in with harbor staff on VHF Channel 16 or by phone at (907) 772-4688. Security and maintenance staff cover shifts around the clock on a 24/7 basis, so vessels can arrive at any hour. The harbor office operates Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (excluding holidays). Reservations are suggested for vessels exceeding 100 feet.

The facility includes clean public restrooms and coin-operated showers. A 200-ton marine haulout and 30-ton travel trailer are available for vessel service. Fuel is not available at North Harbor directly - diesel and gasoline can be obtained from Petro Marine Services in Petersburg, a short distance from the waterfront. The harbor complex also supports a working fish-buying operation and multiple seafood processing facilities within close range of the docks.

Town Access and Amenities

North Harbor's location on Harbor Way puts downtown Petersburg within easy walking distance. Banks, grocery stores, restaurants, a laundromat, a drug store, and liquor stores are all reachable on foot. Sing Lee Alley - a historic stretch of wooden buildings dating to the 1910s, built on pilings over Hammer Slough - is one of the most atmospheric corners of any Southeast Alaska town and a short stroll from the harbor. The Sons of Norway Hall (1912), a National Historic Landmark decorated with traditional rosemaling, stands as the cultural anchor of Petersburg's Norwegian community.

Norwegian Heritage and Local Events

Petersburg's Norwegian identity is a living community tradition. The Little Norway Festival, held every third weekend in May and running since 1958, transforms the town into a full Scandinavian celebration: a dragon-bowed Viking ship parades down Nordic Drive, residents don traditional bunads, and shrimp and crab feeds draw visitors from across the region. Arriving by boat during the festival guarantees a berth in one of the most festive small ports in Alaska.

Wildlife and Cruising Destinations

The waters around Petersburg are exceptionally rich. Frederick Sound is one of the most reliable humpback whale concentration areas in Southeast Alaska - hundreds of whales feed here through summer. Killer whales, Steller sea lions, Dall's porpoises, harbor seals, and bald eagles round out the wildlife list. LeConte Bay, home to the continent's southernmost tidewater glacier, is approximately 20 miles by water to the east - a full-day excursion that includes navigating through calving icebergs. Petersburg is also well-connected by the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry, making it a practical logistics base for crew changes along the Inside Passage.
