About MV Fortitude

Welcome aboard Fortitude! She’s a 1991 Kadey-Krogen 54 and the last of only eight ever built, which makes her extra special to us. Welcome aboard Fortitude! She’s a 1991 Kadey-Krogen 54 and the last of only eight ever built, which makes her extra special to us. Designed by the legendary Jim Krogen, Fortitude is everything we could ever want in a boat—seaworthy, efficient, and full of character. With her 57-foot overall length and 17-foot beam, she’s spacious, stable, and ready for anything the water throws at us. As hull #8, she’s the grand finale of a truly remarkable series of boats, and we feel lucky to call her home.

We’re Steven and Suzanne Webster, and we’ve been living aboard Fortitude for years, cruising the breathtaking waters of the Pacific Northwest. From the Salish Sea to the Inside Passage, we’ve embraced life on the water with open arms (and a lot of layers—it gets chilly out here!). With her three staterooms, two heads, and a roomy cockpit, Fortitude is perfect for both adventure and comfort. Whether we’re navigating remote coastlines or kicking back in a quiet anchorage, she’s always up for the journey.

What makes the Kadey-Krogen 54 so incredible is how it combines practicality with a little touch of luxury. Inside, we’ve got a cozy salon, a fully stocked galley, and plenty of room for living aboard full-time. Her full-displacement hull gives us a smooth, steady ride, even when things get a little bumpy out there. And with her fuel efficiency, we can go the distance—she’s a true passagemaker, built for big dreams and far horizons.

But Fortitude isn’t just our home; she’s also part of our mission to make boating better for everyone. That’s why we created WalkTheDock, a community for boaters, by boaters. We know firsthand how confusing and overwhelming boating can be at times, so we wanted to build a space where people can connect, share tips, and learn from each other. Whether it’s advice on marinas, anchorages, or maintenance, or just a place to show off your boat (we love that part!), WalkTheDock is all about celebrating life on the water.

For us, life aboard Fortitude is about more than just exploring beautiful places—it’s about sharing our passion with others and making boating a little easier, a little more fun, and a whole lot more connected. Whether we’re cruising to our next destination or working on WalkTheDock, we’re grateful for this incredible life on the water and all the adventures it brings. See you out there!

Dockside Patience: Waiting for Better Weather in Port Townsend

As a trawler captain, few experiences are as quintessentially maritime as waiting for the right weather to cross any open water strait – in this case, the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This huge waterway, connecting the Pacific Ocean to the Puget Sound, is known for its unpredictable weather and challenging conditions. Today, nestled in the charming harbor of Port Townsend, WA, our crew is in a familiar state of…

  • The Joys of Living A Life on a Boat

Have you ever dreamt of leaving the hustle and bustle of land behind and setting sail on the open seas? • Turning Your Boat Into a Home: Designing a Cozy, Functional Interior Without Compromise

When we first made the leap to live aboard our boat, we knew it would take more than just moving in our belongings to make it feel like home. A boat isn’t just a mode of transportation—it’s your sanctuary, your safe harbor, and for liveaboards, it’s where life happens. Creating an interior space that feels like a true home while respecting the unique challenges of a vessel requires creativity, planning, and a willingness to adapt.

  • Steadier Seas, Classic Lines: Why We Chose Paravanes for Fortitude

For years, we toyed with the idea of adding paravanes to Fortitude, our 1991 Kadey-Krogen 54. The thought would come up most often after a long, rolly crossing when half the two-person crew had retreated below to wait out sea sickness, leaving the captain alone on watch, to grind it out through hours of confused seas. Like many long-range cruisers, we had dreams of going farther —…
