Petersburg South Harbor is the newest of Petersburg Borough's three harbor basins, built in 1982 and dredged to original design depths in 2022-23. Situated along South Nordic Drive, it is the primary transient stop for cruisers visiting Little Norway — close to town, fuel, and the full borough harbor services.
Petersburg South Harbor sits at the southern end of the Petersburg waterfront on Wrangell Narrows, a narrow and well-marked tidal passage connecting Frederick Sound to the south with Sumner Strait to the north. The harbor is the youngest of the three basins operated by Petersburg Borough, constructed in 1982 and dredged for the first time in its history in 2022-23. Approximately 57,000 cubic yards of sediment were removed during that project to restore original design depths ranging from 9 to 19 feet below mean lower low water.
South Harbor is the preferred stop for transient recreational and charter vessels visiting Petersburg. Its location along South Nordic Drive puts cruisers within easy walking distance of downtown, where Norwegian heritage is woven deeply into the town identity. The Sons of Norway Hall, Clausen Memorial Museum, and the seasonal Fiskekona statue are a short stroll away, as are grocery stores, hardware, pharmacies, laundromats, and restaurants.
The harbor accommodates a mix of permanent leaseholders — predominantly commercial fishing vessels working the rich Southeast Alaska grounds — and summer transients including recreational trawlers, sailboats, and small cruise vessels. The harbor office provides 24/7 staff coverage; during business hours the harbormaster's team can assign slips and assist with local area information.
Petro Marine Services (Petro One) operates a fuel dock at 902 S. Nordic Drive immediately adjacent to the harbor, supplying diesel and gasoline to marine vessels. This is the primary marine fuel source for all three Petersburg harbor basins. Electricity is available at berths throughout the harbor system. Restrooms and coin-operated showers are provided for public use at the harbor facilities.
Petersburg sits at approximately 56.8 degrees N, sheltered within the Inside Passage. Wrangell Narrows provides good protection from ocean swell and the surrounding terrain buffers most wind. Prevailing weather comes from the southeast in winter storms but the harbor basins are well protected by the geography. Summer cruising conditions are typically calm to light wind with frequent overcast and occasional rain, consistent with the maritime climate of Southeast Alaska.
