Fury Cove

Tucked behind Fury Island at the mouth of Rivers Inlet, Fury Cove is one of the Central Coast's most beloved anchorages, famous for its dazzling white crushed-shell beaches and as the classic first stop after rounding Cape Caution.

About this Anchorage

Fury Cove sits in Penrose Island Marine Park, where Fitz Hugh Sound meets the entrance to Rivers Inlet, roughly 86 km north of Port Hardy. A natural ring of islands, islets and reefs wraps the cove, creating a snug, well-protected basin that has made it the traditional overnight stop for boats heading north before (or recovering after) the exposed run around Cape Caution.

The cove is best known for its brilliant white shell beaches, the crushed remains of ancient midden, which turn the shallows an aquamarine color on a sunny day. Ashore there is shell-beach walking, tide-pool exploring by dinghy, and views out across Fitz Hugh Sound. The stone remains of an old fish trap lie in the shallow channel leading from the west side of the cove into Darby Channel.

Holding is generally good in mud and shell, and the surrounding land keeps most weather out, though the cove does not flush strongly, so boaters are asked not to discharge blackwater here. On a busy summer evening it can fill with a dozen or more boats; the overflow alternative is Big Frypan Bay nearby.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

The usual approach is from Fitz Hugh Sound: use Rouse Point as a reference and head for the main entrance between Heathcote and Cleve Islands, leaving Cleve Island to port, then turning to port toward the narrow entrance. Pilotage demands attention because Penrose Island Marine Park is studded with islands, islets and reefs; keep to charted water. Chart CHS 3921 is the reference for this area.

Inside the cove, avoid the charted rock that dries close to Fury Island. Breaker Pass, the gap between Fury and Cleve Islands, is passable in calm conditions but lives up to its name in any southwesterly swell and should not be relied upon as an entrance in wind. The cove itself is the best-protected water around, but it is exposed to strong southwest/southerly winds funneling up from Queen Charlotte Sound; in a forecast gale, anchor in the south part of the cove and run a stern line to Fury Island.
