About this Anchorage

Echo Bay sits on the northwest coast of Gilford Island, looking out over Raleigh Passage roughly 30 miles northeast of Port McNeill. For decades it has been one of the social hubs of the Broughtons, anchored by Pierre's at Echo Bay Lodge and Marina, famous for its character, summer happy-hour gatherings, and the Saturday-night pig roast.

At the head of the bay is little Echo Bay Marine Provincial Park, a 1.5-hectare park with a fine shell beach, a small public wharf for vessels under 7 metres, and a trail leading over to Proctor Bay. The bay has been used by First Nations people for centuries, as the many shell middens within the park attest.

A short walk from the marina is Billy Proctor's Museum, the lifelong collection of the late beachcomber and fisherman Billy Proctor: bottles, arrowheads, tools, fishing gear, and thousands of artifacts that tell the story of life in the Broughtons.

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Echo Bay is approached from Cramer Passage / Raleigh Passage and is straightforward to enter, though the bay is fairly deep and open toward the northwest, so it offers only partial shelter and limited good swinging room. Most cruisers tie up at Pierre's rather than anchor; those who do anchor head deep into the bay near the park float.

The bay is generally not considered a top anchorage (holding and protection are mediocre), and many guides recommend nearby Shoal Harbour, which offers all-round protection and good holding in mud, as the preferred anchoring alternative. Watch depths along the shore and the rocky margins near the park beach and wharf at the head of the bay.
