About this Anchorage

Built on a small island connected to Prince of Wales by causeway, Craig is the largest community and the working heart of the island's outer coast. It is home base for much of the island's troller fleet, and its waterfront is a tight cluster of two harbors, fish-buying docks, a seaplane float, and historic cannery wharves.

The town runs two municipal boat harbors on either side of the causeway: North Cove, which packs in trollers, seiners, longliners and crab boats, and South Cove, used for smaller recreational and charter vessels. The harbormaster's office sits near South Cove and offers year-round heated public showers and restrooms.

Services are unusually complete for the outer coast: a fuel dock near the tank farm, a full grocery and liquor store, laundromat, restaurants, library and chandlery. In peak summer fishing season the harbors fill completely, and visiting boats anchor out in the bay rather than find a berth.

Local Knowledge

Approaches & Known Hazards

Approach notes, hazards to watch for, and what's available once you're tied up.

Craig lies off San Cristoval Channel within Bucareli Bay, reached from the open Pacific across the rock-strewn, reef-studded outer coast of Prince of Wales Island. The offshore approaches through Bucareli Bay are exposed and demand careful chart work around numerous rocks, reefs and islets; NOAA Chart 17405 covers the inner approach to Craig. Once inside, the waters between Craig Island and the Prince of Wales mainland are sheltered.

Slip space is often unavailable in summer; boats then anchor in the bay. Holding is generally good mud, but rough conditions can make tying up at the fuel dock and harbors difficult on windy days. Confirm berth or fuel availability with the harbormaster on approach.
