Campbell River is the staging port for the run up Johnstone Strait — fuel, groceries, last reliable big-box stop before the cruising thins out for hundreds of miles. The town itself sits below Discovery Passage where the tide rips past Cape Mudge at 7 knots; the Tyee Pool is one of the great salmon fishing grounds on the coast. Most northbound boats stop here to top off, watch the weather, and time the Seymour Narrows transit. Almost nobody plans Campbell River as a destination, but a lot of trips would be lost without it.
